RESULTS: Kutztown Invitational

Kutztown Invitational
Saturday, September 11, 1999
Weather: Sunny & 78F

Boys Race: Ed Schlichter of Chambersburg took off from the gun. Across the
broad soccer fields and through the first tree break the thundering herd
chased him. Wyo's Joel Moceri steadily moved by the pack up the right side.
By the first turn., Joel was on Schlichter's heels, where he proceeded to
draft him for the next mile. Just past the softball fields, Joel drew even.
At the same point along the tree line (first time by) up the short rise, Joel
surged. The same patented move that he made at last year's Berks Co.
Championship. The result was the same, the pain was visible on Schlichter's
face as Joel cruised away. Never seriously challenged again, the gap
lengthened steadily the rest of the way as Joel won by over 120 meters and 20
seconds. The rest of the Wyo boys made a great showing. Joel Goodling was
battling for 10th all day only to slightly fade in the last half mile to a
13th place finish. First year runners Josh Vanderveen and Paul Stoltfus ran
in a close trio with Jeff Muir for the first two miles. Josh made a big move
up to 15th and eventually finished 17th with Paul finishing strong to snare
the 18th place medal. Jeff was 23rd. Overall, the Spartans finished a solid
2nd as a team to team winner Chambersburg.

Girls Race: The Wyo girls achieved a first: Winning the Kutztown Invitational
and defeating the traditionally strong AAA power Chambersburg for the first
time ever. Beth Armstrong of Chambersburg led from start to finish to grab
the individual win. She was briefly challenged for the first half mile by
Dana Early of Ridley, who dropped back to finish a solid 3rd. Kelly Baker of
Chambersburg broke away from a Wyo controlled pack at the 1 mile mark and
followed her team-mate to a second place. It was the chasing pack that of 10
created the excitement for the Wyo fans. Stretched across the front for the
first 1-1/2 miles, were Senior Jess Geissler, All-State Junior Jana Sallade,
and two freshman Amy & Debbie Huss. Senior Erin Flannery trailed just off
this pack marking her arch-rival Tai Gonslaves. Never in anyone's recent
memory had any Spartan harrier team (male or female) showed such power at a
big meet. Along the tree line the first time, it was Sallade who powered up
the rise and around the corner at the end of the treeline stretching out the
chase group. Geissler faded slightly back to about 10th, but the Huss twins
persisted right on Jana's heels. It was truly an inspiring sight for Coach
Hetrick watching his wave of blue all come in within 40 seconds of each
other. At the finish, it was Sallade-4th, A. Huss-5th, D. Huss-6th,
Geissler-11th and Flannery-13th. The rest of the Chambersburg team was 15th,
17th and 19th. A solid defeat of a AAA power. The only Berks Co. runners to
break up the Big Blue Wave were All-State Nikki Angstadt of Fleetwood in 8th
and second team All-Berks Tai Gonsalver in 10th.
