MOCERI, AMY HUSS & SPARTAN GIRLS SNARE COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Boys Race: Spartan All-State Junior Joel Moceri broke away from the pack
right from the line and was never challenged at any point and romped to his
2nd Berks County individual champinship in a row by over 40 seconds. Only
James McDonald of Fleetwood made any attempt at going with Joel in the first
mile, but the pace was too high even though it appeared that Joel was just
gliding along. McDonald ran a strong race until the final short uphill along
the tree line where he was passed by Conrad Weiser Sophomore Chris Muldoon, a
rising talent, who held off McDonald for 2nd by 10 meters. Mifflin's Josh
Gerloff ran an inspired race for a 4th place. Jay Leininger of Boyertown was
battling Muldoon in 3rd for the first 2 miles until he faded in the last mile
to finish 5th. In the team competition, the Gov. Mifflin Mustangs won their
first team championship in 31 years with a good effort from their #2,3 & 4
runners (Nuhfer 15th, Lubas 18th and Kline 20th). Their 5th man Moss finished
32nd. Even though their 85 point total was probably the highest ever winning
score, it was enough for the Mustangs to win in a very evenly matched team
competition. Boyertown was 2nd and Twin Valley 3rd. Other than Moceri, the
rest of the Spartans got off to a slow start from which they never recovered
and finished 4th overall as a team. Freshman Paul Stoltzfus ran his best race
of the year finishing the last mile very strongly for a 19th place. Josh
VanderVeen was 27th, Joel Goodling 33rd and Jeff Muir 38th to complete the
scoring for the Spartans.

Girls Race: The Wyo girls extended their perfect season with a smashing
victory in the Berks County Conference Championship race. Freshman Amy Huss
gave the Spartans its 2nd individual girl county champion (the first being
Crystal Russell in 1995) with an impressive performance over the entire
course. After the gun and a big charge across the Kutztown University soccer
plain, it was Spartans Amy Huss and Jess Geissler leading the group with a
small gap. At the 1 mile mark after swooping around the cornfields, it was
all blue at the front - 4 Spartans (A.Huss, Geissler, Janna Sallade and
Debbie Huss) and 2 Tulpehocken Trojans (Alicia Gehris and Desiree Bower). A
trio of Mifflin yellow (Nikki Stoyer, Alison Stoyko and Melissa Weitzel) was
slightly behind this front group with Nikki Angstadt of Fleetwood. The
Mustang string of County Championships was already in big trouble. As the
girls came by the tree line for the first time, the biggest surprise
materializing was the absence of defending champion Gehris at the front.
Gehris had fallen to 7th place and even her teammate Bower, who turned to
look back as if waiting for Gehris, appeared shocked. At this point Gehris
waved her teammate on as if signaling that this wasn't going to be her day.
Instead it was Amy Huss who was powering away from the field by herself.
Giving chase were Angstadt and Stoyer who were marked by Wyo's Sallade. Next
were Debbie Huss and Geissler running side by side. Up the short hill at the
end of the tree line for the first time the race began to string out from
Huss's pressure at the front. Over the next mile and by the Kutztown
University classrooms, she increased her lead. Amy only began to slow
slightly in the last 400 meters where Angstadt made a valiant effort to win.
But this was Huss's day as she crossed the line to take the gold. Angstadt
was 2nd - 12 meters back. Meanwhile, in a repeat battle from last week at
Mifflin, Sallade hung on Stoyer's heels all the way, but Stoyer held Janna
off again for 3rd. Only this time Janna didn't fade in the last half mile and
finished only 5 meters behind for 4th. In 5th was Debbie Huss, who gave the
Spartans 3 finishers in the top five - a dominating performance. Mustang
Stoyko, who had finished so strongly last week at Shillington had nothing
left this time, but she was a solid 6th - 50 meters behind D. Huss. In 7th
and 8th were the two Trojans, Bower and Gehris. Wyo's Geissler, who had a
very strong race all the way (especially in the first mile) was 11th
comfortably ahead of #3 Mustang Weitzel. Erin Flannery finished 21st to
complete the scoring for the Spartans. The Wyo girls had won their first ever
Berks County Team Championship and had dethroned the Mustang juggernaut. The
Spartans slaughtered the herd all three times they met this year. The Stangs'
were 2nd and Twin Valley, who had a strong team race was 3rd.
