Boys Wyomissing 27 - Governor Mifflin 30 Wyomissing 15 - Daniel Boone 40 Governor Mifflin 15 - Daniel Boone 40 The contest was for the best record this year in the regular season dual meets. And Wyo took the prize with a surprise victory over the 'Stangs on Mifflin's home course. At the gun, one of the Mifflin back of the packers took off in a sprint and led for the first quarter mile trying to inspire his team mates. Actually, just before the first hill there was a wave of yellow at the front with Joel Moceri being the sole Spartan presence at the front. At the left turn up the first steep hill, Joel took charge. Josh Gerloff of Mifflin tried to go with him, but was discarded by the top. Also on this hill, the race began to string out and the Wyo boys began to move up. Everyone disappeared into the woods. When the runners reappeared at the halfway point, it was Joel cranking away in a break away off the front followed at a distance by Gerloff, then Chad Alena of Boone, then Joel Goodling, then Todd Lubas and Matt Nuhter of Mifflin. But a then came some blue. It was Jeff Muir, Josh Vanderveen, and Shawn Goodling and then two yellow. Everyone began their weave up short steep hills and through the kiddie playground. Joel Goodling faltered slightly in this stretch and with a mile to go three Mifflin boys were running together #2,3,4. But the next 5 were all Wyo blue with Freshman Paul Stoltzfus powering his way by two Mifflin boys. Scoring wise Mifflin was in trouble as their coaches and fans exhorted their # 4 & 5 runners. The last half mile was all down hill except for one short rise before the sprint. Moceri won in a romp, but then it was Gerloff, Lubas, and Nuhter of Mifflin finishing 2,3,4. One by one the the blue boys powered in. J. Goodling at #5, Boone's Alena (also in blue) at #6, Vanderveen #7, S. Goodling at # 8, Stoltzfus (who had put in a great performance in his first race in 2-1/2 weeks) in #9, and a fading Jeff Muir at #10. Finally some yellow at #11 & 312, but the scoring was over and Wyo had stolen a close victory from the 'Stangs. 1. 15:01 WY Joel Moceri 2. 16:07 GM Josh Gerloff 3. 16:08 GM Todd Lubas 4. 16:13 GM Matt Nuhter 5. 16:21 DB Chad Alena 6. 16:24 WY Joel Goodling 7. 16:42 WY Josh VanderVeen 8. 16:46 WY Shawn Goodling 9. 16:48 WY Paul Stoltzfus 10. 16:54 WY Jeff Muir 11. 16:56 GM Joel Gerloff 12. 17:09 GM Chris Kline 13. 17:10 WY Jon Clouser 14. 17:31 GM Pete Rogers 15. 17:33 GM Steve Seasholtz 16. 17:37 GM Greg Linsky 17. 17:40 GM Chris Leddy 18. 17:52 GM Ian Farrell 19. 17:58 GM Ryan Spangler 20. 18:04 GM Kevin Hinrichs 21. 18:06 WY Chris Schaeffer 22. 18:31 WY Tim Shapiro 23. 18:40 GM Tim Gombar 24. 18:50 WY Ken Adams 25. 18:55 WY Greg Meyers 26. 19:00 WY Mike Mathis 27. 19:16 WY Dave Adams 28. 19:25 DB Doug Stuart 29. 19:32 GM Geoff Hasker 30. 19:51 GM David Bluestone 31. 20:12 WY Kishan Parikh 32. 20:13 WY Josh Barron 33. 20:27 GM Matt Deitrich 34. 20:39 WY Connor Larkin 35. 20:53 WY Ryan Buchanan 36. 21:03 WY Phil Magistro 37. 21:04 WY Tim Becker 38. 21:05 WY Jason Yanchuleff 39. 21:09 DB Chris March 40. 21:09 WY Nils Janson 41. 21:25 GM Tyler Donahue 42. 24:16 DB James Miller Girls Wyomissing 25 - Governor Mifflin 30 Wyomissing 15 - Daniel Boone 40 Governor Mifflin 15 - Daniel Boone 40 A pre-race article in the morning Reading Times had touted this as "The race of the year". Mifflin's 81 dual meet streak vs. the upstart Spartans, who had dominated the 'Stangs 1-1/2 weeks before at Pottstown. It even featured an unprecedented sell out size crowd for a cross country meet. Scalpers were getting premium prices and the fans on both sides were shouting their teams' war chants. At the gun, a Mifflin golden wave charged off the line. At the first quarter mile mark, it was Nikki Stoyer, Alison Stoyko and Melissa Weitzel of Mifflin at the front, then two blue, three Mifflins and two more blue. The Mustangs were trying to give the Spartans a big kick in the early going. They weren't about to let their streak go down easily. The first short steep hill settled things out. It was here that Wyo leader Janna Sallade muscled her way between Stoyer and Stoyko all the way up. Next, the Huss twins were pacing side by side followed by Senior captain Jess Geissler and then Weitzel. As the girls rolled through the wooded paths, wild shouts marked their progress. At the halfway point, Stoyer led and was setting a strong pace with Sallade in her slip stream. Debbie Huss had battled past Stoyko, but Stoyko stayed in tow. Then came Geissler and Amy Huss running together strongly and Senior Erin Flannery who had galloped past Weitzel. The only thing that changed in the next half mile was that Flannery faded slightly on the short steep hills and allowed Weitzel to pass her. But on a steep downhill, Flannery breezed past Weitzel again to restore the order. With a mile to go, it looked like Sallade was lining up Stoyer for a pass and was capable of the win. But Stoyer made a move on the last hard hill and Sallade began to labor. The long half mile finishing downhill brought broad grins and whoops of joy to the Wyo fans. Sure Sallade was obviously fading and Stoyko had charged back up to second place, but places 3-7 were safely in the Spartan point column. The Mustangs' streak had ended. Stoyer took the win with ease and Stoyko made a great charge for a strong second place. But then it was all Wyo. Debbie Huss was third, then Sallade, Geissler 5th, Amy Huss 6th and finally Flannery 7th. The Mustang juggernaut had been lassoed and was rumored to be headed for the nearest Alpo factory. Oops, only having fun. Nevertheless, it was a great win for the Spartans and set up one last showdown for the County Championship at the Conference run at Kutztown. 1. 18:20 GM Nikki Stoyer 2. 18:21 GM Alison Stoyko 3. 18:27 WY Debbie Huss 4. 18:35 WY Janna Sallade 5. 18:55 WY Jess Geissler 6. 18:59 WY Amy Huss 7. 19:13 WY Erin Flannery 8. 19:25 GM Melissa Weitzel 9. 20:07 GM Katie Grim 10. 20:16 GM Shawn Krumholz 11. 20:23 WY Erin Crider 12. 20:24 WY Lauren Shaub 13. 20:45 GM Jen Vu 14. 20:53 WY Astrid Chastka 15. 21:03 GM Courtney Dublin 16. 21:05 GM Sara Kramer 17. 21:12 GM Amy Donovan 18. 21:14 GM Jackey Curry 19. 21:30 DB Leslie Gaines 20. 21:31 DB Mary Rice 21. 21:32 DB Susan Kline 22. 21:44 GM Fredrick Julie 23. 22:01 GM Jen Sternick 24. 22:02 GM Lisa McNisch 25. 22:02 GM Chelsea Nilsson 26. 22:17 GM Exas Callie 27. 22:25 DB Lora Shirey 28. 22:42 WY Caroline Simmons 29. 22:52 GM Alimin Nick 30. 22:54 DB Cara McCarty 31. 23:19 GM Laura Stephan 32. 23:23 DB Brianne Horich 33. 23:42 GM Lauren Oberholtzer 34. 23:43 GM Rachel Miller 35. 24:14 GM Abby Marinazzi 36. 24:54 GM Molly Baxter 37. 25:98 GM Melissa Moyer 38. 25:38 GM Ana Lappier 39. 29:07 DB Joanna Diaz 40. 29:44 DB Amy Kemp 41. 30:46 GM Gina Buchanan
